    SONS OF THE LEGION

    Detachment of Utah

Preamble to the S.A.L. National Constitution

Proud possessors of a priceless heritage, we male descendants of veterans of the Great Wars, associate ourselves together as "Sons of The American Legion" for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism; to preserve the memories of our former members and the associations of our members and our forefathers in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our friendship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness; to adopt in letter and spirit all of the great principles for which The American Legion stands; and to assist in carrying on for God and Country.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all a Happy New Year. Did you know The American Legion publishes a financial aid handbook for high school students titled “Need A Lift?” The publication features information on scholarships, loan and grant opportunities and information about specific colleges and careers. The publication can be purchased for $3.95, including shipping, prepaid from American Legion Emblem Sales, PO Box 1050, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206.
The American Legion has also established the American Legion Legacy Scholarship for children of service men and women killed while on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001. The application is available on the Legion’s web site www.legion.org or from The American Legacy Scholarship, The American Legion, PO Box 1055, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206. Contributions to the fund may also be sent to the above address.
There are many Detachments that also give out scholarships. You need to check with your Detachment or your Detachment officers, to see what the requirements are and when applications need to be back to the Detachments. It is important that we promote to our member's and their families to take advantage of these scholarship opportunities, especially in these difficult economic times.
I would also like to remind everyone if they are able to help with The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. I wrote about this program last month. I will keep this article up so if you are interested you may go to it and review it. This program of the American Legion, if it has not all ready started, is starting this month and will continue through the finals in early April.
